Financial Considerations

A note on expenses in China:
Although necessary transportation, accommodations and food are covered by the program we do not cover personal items. Some teachers may wish to buy souvenirs, clothes and treat themselves out to nice hotel or restaurant. In China these things will be cheaper than in the states, but these little expenses add up. You can make it without spending much at all but normally teachers go through around $300-$500 USD for souvenirs and excess expenses. If you plan to travel after the program is finished that will set you back substantially. Plan to bring $500 a week for budget travel.
General Expenses in China:
As your cost of living (housing, meals, school's recreational and entertainment facilities) is provided, it is possible to stay through our summer program without incurring many expenses at all. But be aware that dollars add up and some goods are deceptively more expensive then you think.
Here are some examples of goods you might buy in China:
 ---Average meal: $1 USD
 ---Bottled Water: .10 cents
---Taxi in big city: $1.50 for a couple kilometers
---Taxi in small city: .50 cents for a couple of kilometers
 ---Bus: .20 Cents
---20 ounce Beer from convenience store: .25 cents
 ---Pair of pants: $6.00 USD
 ---Light Jacket: $6.00 USD
---12 ounce beer at upscale bar: $4.00 USD!
---Entrance to upscale club in major city: $10 USD
---Decent hotel in major city: $40 USD a night
---Decent hotel in small city: $15 USD a night
---If you go to the big cities you can expect to find all the name brand prices for goods that will be the same price as in America or Europe. There are many coffee and ice cream bars that have prices comparable with American prices as well. It’s just as easy to spend all your money as it is to keep a comfortable budget.
