The ACT Center is part owned by the Chinese company TEFL Academy and part owned by American teachers and former participants. TEFL Academy is involved in designing and printing educational textbooks and software, providing English language services and opening and running English language schools through Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Beijing and Guangzhou. TEFL Academy also has partnerships with schools all over China. ACT’s American branch is responsible mainly for providing educational exchange services to native English speakers. We work to recruit, promote, provide information, select participants, make institutional affiliations, arrange transportation, visas and more. ACT’s China branch is responsible for creating new partner schools across China (in cooperation with TEFL Academy), recruiting teacher assistants to assist with the foreign English teachers, arranging the tours, arranging the hotels, arranging the transportation, food and more. There are many sides to ACT’s work. The schools make schedules and demands for quality English teachers, the English teachers demand services and goods, and our job is often to balance the two sides. Staff members of ACT often travel back and forth to China and America to participate in the organization of programs. We believe in operating in a democratic fashion letting decisions be collaboratively made between our teachers, schools and staff.
